How long is the Bibbulmun Track, Western Australia?

The holy grail of walking in Western Australia is the Bibbulmun Track. Stretching from Kalamunda in the Perth Hills to Albany, the Bibbulmun Track is just over 1,000km long.

Australia has several long-distance walking trails. In the Northern Territory, the Jatbula Trail laces through the Nitmiluk National Park and the Tabletop Track covers the highlights of the Litchfield National Park.

In Sydney, the Great Coastal Walk links in popular walks such as the Bondi to Coogee clifftop walk and the Hermitage Foreshore Walk as it covers the city’s beaches and Sydney Harbour.

And, in Victoria, the Great Ocean Walk strings together highlights of the Great Ocean Road such as the Great Otway National Park and the Twelve Apostles.

Most of these are relatively recent marketing concoctions, but an old stalwart of walking in Western Australia is the Bibbulmun Track. Construction on this long distance walking trail began in 1979, and it has been an alluring challenge for walkers ever since.

Where is the Bibbulmun Track?

The Bibbulmun Track runs from Kalamunda in the Perth Hills to Albany on the south coast of Western Australia. On the way, it passes close to appealing towns such as Balingup, Pemberton, Walpole and Denmark. The latter, should you be thirsty, is the home of the Boston Brewery.

Most of the track runs through state forests, reserves and national parks. But how long is the Bibbulmun Track?

Bibbulmum Track length

Well, it depends where you look – different sites give conflicting distances, although they’re all around 1,000km. Using the distance calculator on the official Bibbulmun Track site, the full distance is 1005.1km. This should take between six and eight weeks to walk in full.

The track is reserved exclusively for walkers – mountain bikes and 4WD vehicles are not allowed. It is signposted every 500 metres with yellow triangular markers featuring Waugal, the rainbow serpent from the Aboriginal Dreaming tales.

Bibbulmun Track camping

There can be several days’ walk between track access points, so expect to bring your own camping gear. There are 49 campsites along the track, spaced approximately a full day’s walk apart.

On the flip side, several sections can be tackled in a few hours. These include the section from the Karri Valley Resort to Beedelup Falls near Pemberton.
