What are the best things to do in Noojee, Victoria?

The best things to do in Noojee, West Gippsland, include the Noojee Pub, Noojee Trestle Bridge Rail Trail, Toorongo Falls and the Ada Tree.

Noojee in West Gippsland barely qualifies as a village, let alone a town. Around 200 people live there. Yet Noojee has an appeal that far outweighs its population.

Noojee lies just of the Mt Baw Baw Tourist Road heading towards Mt Baw Baw in West Gippsland, Victoria. The Noojee Hotel – called the Noojee Pub by pretty much everyone – is centre of the action. It has a marvellous location on the banks of the Latrobe River, and serves up classic pub meals such as burgers, salt and pepper squid and chicken parmas.

The main tourist attraction in Noojee itself is the Noojee Heritage Centre at the Noojee Railway Station Precinct. This small local museum delves into the area’s timber industry past.

Things to do in Noojee: Alpine Trout Farm

But the main two things to do in Noojee are just to the west of the town. The Alpine Trout Farm is a couple of kilometres down the Mt Baw Baw Tourist Road in Piedmont. The Alpine Trout Farm sells pre-caught trout, but the real appeal lies in being able to fish for your own.

Nearby, the Noojee Trestle Bridge is a picturesque remnant of the former Noojee to Warragul Railway. 102 metres long and 21 metres high, this wooden bridge is the centrepiece of the Noojee Trestle Bridge Rail Trail. A 3km section of the former railway line has been turned into a walking and cycling track.

What to do in Noojee, Victoria: The Ada Tree

Go a little further afield from Noojee, and you can see the Ada Tree. This is one of the biggest and oldest trees in Australia, and it’s estimated to be at least 300 years old. The drive north-west to the Ada Tall Trees Reserve via the New Turkey Spur Road is about 30km long.

Once there, the walk from the Ada Tree Picnic Area to the towering mountain ash is 3.2km return. It’s an easy-going grade two walk that should take a leisurely half hour through the rainforest.

Things to do in Noojee, Victoria: Toorongo Falls and Amphitheatre Falls

Even nearer to Noojee is Toorongo Falls, a forest-surrounded waterfall that cascades down a rock face. The Toorongo Falls Circuit Walk is 2.2km and throws in a bonus visit to Amphitheatre Falls.

The drive from Melbourne to Noojee is about 130km long, taking roughly an hour and three quarters. This handful of things to do in Noojee can be combined with highlights a little further east, including husky dog sledding tours at Mt Baw Baw and the Walhalla Goldfields Railway in Walhalla.
