Belongil Beach: Byron Bay nude beach surfing & accommodation
Go to Belongil Beach in Byron Bay for a nude beach, cheap Byron Bay accommodation, smaller crowds and surfing at the Wreck.
Belongil Beach is part of the reason Byron Bay in northern New South Wales has become such a popular resort town. Before everyone wanted a piece of Byron Bay, the town was popular with backpackers. And before that, it was popular with surfers.
If you can do just one thing in Byron Bay, make it kayaking with dolphins. The scenery’s beautiful, and you can get much closer to the dolphins than you would on a boat tour. BOOK HERE.
The reason it was popular with surfers is not because Byron Bay Main Beach is great for surfing. It’s because there are several beaches, facing in different directions, that are great for surfing. If the surf isn’t up at one of them, then it probably will be at another. Hence Byron Bay surfing lessons tend to shift location a little depending on conditions.
Belongil Beach: Surfing and swimming
Dune-backed Belongil Beach, north-west of Byron Bay town centre, is one of these surf beaches. Some reckon it’s the best beach in Byron Bay, and the white silica sands are certainly impressive.
The best surf break at Belongil Beach is the Wreck, an often fierce right-hander. To non-surfers, the Wreck is the remnants of the SS Wollongbar shipwreck. The hull and boilers can still be seen.
Where is Belongil Beach?
Belongil Beach is 2.5km long and stretches from the Main Beach seawall to the mouth of Belongil Creek. It changes character somewhat along the way. The southern end is considerably busier, and is patrolled by lifeguards. On busy days, the southern end of Belongil Beach can feel like an extension of Byron Bay main beach. But it is the safest part of the beach for swimming.
