Devonport weather: When is the best time to visit northern Tasmania?

The Devonport weather is much better in summer than winter. Unless you really like being rained on, the best time to visit northern Tasmania is between December and March.

The best time to visit northern Tasmania depends, to a large extent, on the weather. Northern Tasmania isn’t quite as weather-dependent as the south, but it’s still not a great deal of fun on a cold winter day.

Devonport weather data should provide a good rule of thumb for the rest of Northern Tasmania. The Bureau of Meteorology has pretty detailed breakdowns by month for the weather in Devonport, so let’s use that.

Devonport weather: Warmest month

The warmest month in Devonport is February, with a mean maximum daily temperature of 21.8°C. January and March are pretty close to this, with December dipping just under 20°C. If you’re planning on an outdoor swim at one of the beaches or Splash Devonport, this is the time to do it.

Somewhat surprisingly, summer temperatures in Tasmanian capital Hobart in the south of the state are a little higher than this. But the Hobart weather is also a little colder in winter. The coldest month in both cities is July. In Devonport, the mean daily maximum temperature is 12.8°C in July – it’s a degree cooler than that in Hobart.

The main reason that summer is the best time to visit northern Tasmania, however, is rainfall. Devonport gets considerably more rain than Hobart. The mean rainfall in February is 37.3mm, but in July it’s 95.8mm. The Devonport weather in the winter months is, frankly, a bit grim.

Devonport is where the Spirit of Tasmania ferry arrives in Australia’s smallest state (but biggest island) from Melbourne. It’s easy enough to hire a car in Devonport then take a road trip around Tassie.
