Moona Moona Creek, Jervis Bay: Swimming amongst the sandbars

Between Huskisson and Vincentia, the mouth of Moona Moona Creek provides a picturesque, shallow swimming spot in Jervis Bay, NSW. Moona Moona Beach is popular with families.

What is Moona Moona Creek?

Moona Moona Creek is a short stream in the Jervis Bay region of New South Wales. The higher reaches of this creek are fairly irrelevant to most visitors, although it starts flowing just east of the Princes Highway.

The real reason Moona Moona Creek is worth knowing about is at the other end. The creek provides a handy border between the towns of Huskisson and Vincentia. At the creek mouth, the water winds around sandbars, providing a picturesque photo stop near the Huskisson Beach Tourist Park.

Swimming at Moona Moona Creek

More importantly, however, the mouth of Moona Moona Creek is a fabulous swimming spot. This is particularly the case for children. The water at Moona Moona Beach is shallow enough for most to stand in, but deep enough for most to swim in. Currents are minimal, and the distances between the sandbars are small.

Swimming at Moona Moona Creek, therefore, is a great option if the swell at Jervis Bay beaches, such as Callala Beach, Greenfield Beach, Murrays Beach, Cave Beach, Iluka Beach or Blenheim Beach, gets too big.

You’ll often see kayakers going for a paddle on Moona Moona Creek, too. But the crowd tends to veer towards families.

Moona Moona Reserve facilities

This is partly because the Moona Moona Reserve, a grassy park, is directly behind what locals call Moona Moona Beach.

Moona Moona Reserve has really handy facilities, including toilets, picnic tables and public barbecues. There’s also a children’s playground.

If you do decide to go swimming in Moona Moona Creek, just be careful with where you’re putting your feet. The creek bed is mostly sandy, but there are a few rocks down there. Some of them are sharp, and can really hurt if you bang your foot on them.
