Go by road and the journey from Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula to the Bellarine Peninsula takes about three hours. Hence the Queenscliff ferry is needed to cross the mouth of Port Phillip Bay and massively cut the journey time.

The Queenscliff ferry is operated by Searoad Ferries, which makes the crossing from Queenscliff on the Bellarine Peninsula to Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula. Timetables are subject to change, but generally the Searoad Ferries crossing operates on the hour, every hour, between 7am and 6pm.

From Queenscliff Harbour to Sorrento Pier, the Queenscliff ferry crossing takes roughly 40 minutes. You also need to factor in the Searoad Ferries check-in times, though. That’s 20 minutes for foot passengers and 40 minutes for vehicles.

Searoad Ferries: Sorrento ferry prices

The Searoad Ferries prices are pretty cheap if you’re a foot passenger. Adult foot passenger fares on the Queenscliff to Sorrento ferry cost just $15 one way.

It’s $11 for children, and family tickets including up to three children cost $44.

Queenscliff car ferry prices

The Queensliff ferry fares are understandably more expensive if you want to take a vehicle across, however. The price to take a standard car one way on the Searoad Ferries route from Queenscliff to Sorrento is $72. Then you have to add on the passenger fares. It’s $13 per adult and $9 for children. Tickets can be bought in advance at the Searoad Ferries website.

Queenscliff ferry for tourists

The Queenscliff ferry is a great way of linking two of Victoria’s most popular tourist regions – the Mornington Peninsula and the Great Ocean Road. That’s not to say you should skip through the Bellarine Peninsula, though. There are several good beaches, including the one at Indented Head. There are also plenty of excellent Bellarine Peninsula wineries. Jack Rabbit and Terindah Estate are particularly worth visiting.

Before hitting the Great Ocean Road, you could also spend some time in Geelong – Victoria’s second largest city. Things to do in Geelong include the National Wool Museum, the various public art trails along the waterfront and Buckley Falls.
