Wahgunyah, Victoria: Which wineries can I visit?

Wahgunyah, Victoria: Which wineries can I visit?

Wahgunyah, Victoria, is home to several Rutherglen region wineries. Worth a look on a Murray River road trip include Pfeiffer Wines, Cofield Wines, Valhalla Wines, All Saints and St Leonards Vineyard.

Wahgunyah, Victoria, is one of several Murray River towns butting up against the New South Wales border. Just to the east of Albury-Wodonga, Wahgunyah is easily incorporated into the drive from Albury to Echuca.

There are a few pleasant riverside parks in Wahgunyah, Victoria, but the main focus here is wine. The town is part of the Rutherglen wine region, and there are several wineries open to visitors.

Pfeiffer Wines and Cofield Wines

Going from south to north, the first winery to look at is Pfeiffer Wines, which offers seated tasting sessions for $10. That $10 fee is refundable upon buying $80 worth of Pfeiffer Wines bottles. There’s quite a range to choose from, including a mataro, a pinot noir and a cabernet merlot. If you really like them, but have limited luggage space, Pfeiffer Wines organises shipping to the UK.

Nearby is Cofield Wines. This Wahgunyah winery’s cellar door is also open to visitors, but it’s arguably the grazing platters that are the main attraction here. Cofield Wines is open every day until 5pm.

Wahgunyah, Victoria wineries: Valhalla Wines, All Saints & St Leonards Vineyard

Valhalla Wines is on the All Saints Road towards Corowa just over the New South Wales border. Here, the emphasis is on hand-crafted wines, with marsanne, shiraz and durif the key varietals made.

Of all the Wahgunyah wineries, the All Saints Winery offers the best visitor experience. That’s mainly because it’s on the grounds of a castle. Special experiences involve a tour of the castle, look at winemaking techniques, tastings at the cellar door and a cheese plate.

Completing the set is the St Leonards Vineyard, which is a sister winery of All Saints. It’s set around a natural lagoon of the Murray River and surrounded by tall gum trees. St Leonards Vineyard Kitchen, the on-site bistro, is the star here. It’s especially worth dropping by during the monthly Music on the Murray events, when acoustic musicians are brought in to liven things up.
