What to do in Kings Park, Perth?

The Giant Boab Tree is the star of the Western Australian Botanic Garden. But other things to do in Kings Park, Perth, include the playgrounds, bushland, gum trees and Aspects gallery.

Kings Park in Perth offers some of the best urban views in Australia, let alone Perth. But you don’t just go there to take a photo from one of the lookouts, then leave.

The Fraser Avenue Precinct is where most visitors enter Kings Park. This is most noted for its red-flowering gum trees. It’s not the flowers that stick in the memory, though, it’s the extraordinary bare silver trunks, glimmering under the Western Australian sun.

State War Memorial and Aspects of Kings Park

The Precinct is home to the State War Memorial and the Aspects of Kings Park gallery/ gift shop, which is a good spot to buy local arts and crafts.

Other attractions in Kings Park include the Rio Tinto Naturescape, which is essentially a giant kids’ playground themed around the natural elements of Western Australia. The Paperbark Waterhole is designed for paddling in, while the Bungarra and Python egg on adventurous climbers. There are several other play areas within the park, too.

Walking is a key part of Kings Park’s appeal, of course. The park is two-thirds bushland, laced with walking trails. But some are showier than others. The Lotterywest Federation Walkway arches above the Western Australian Botanic Garden, passing tall eucalyptus trees at canopy height.

Things to do in Kings Park, Perth: Western Australian Botanic Garden

That Botanic Garden, of course, is the main reason to visit. Covering 17 hectares, it is home to more than 3,000 species of native Western Australian flora. They’re grouped by region, so walking through the gardens becomes a natural journey through the state.

Amongst the trees and flowers are interpretive signs explaining the history and philosophies of the Indigenous Noongar people, plus plenty of bold public art.

Giant Boab Tree in Kings Park, Perth

Most beloved of all, however, is the Giant Boab Tree, Gija Jumulu. This mammoth specimen is 14 metres high, eight metres wide and approximately 750 years old. The enormous trunk is 2.5 metres in diameter.

In 2008, the Giant Boab travelled 3,200km from the Kimberley region in the north of Western Australia. It has very quickly become one of the main attractions in Kings Park.

If that’s not enough for you, try taking a Kings Park Segway tour.

The park is one of the unquestioned highlights of Perth, which is the only Australian city you can currently fly direct to from the UK. Elizabeth Quay is the shiny new development, but Yagan Square is arguably a better meeting place. Top day trips from the city include quokka-dotted Rottnest Island and the Swan Valley wine region.
