Anzac Bridge, Sydney: Length, history and tolls
The Anzac Bridge in Sydney connects Pyrmont to Glebe Island. It has been in use since 1995, and there is no toll.
The cable-stayed Anzac Bridge in Sydney would be the city’s most celebrated bridge pretty much anywhere else in the world. In Sydney, though, it comes a distant second to the majesty of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Where is the Anzac Bridge?
The Anzac Bridge is to the west of Sydney CBD. It is one of the major connections between the city centre and Western Suburbs. The A4 – or Western Distributor – runs across it.
More precisely, the Anzac Bridge runs from the western end of Pyrmont near the Sydney Fish Market, and crosses Johnston Bay to Glebe Island in the suburb of Rozelle.

How long is the Anzac Bridge in Sydney?
The Anzac Bridge is a relatively new addition to the city skyline. It opened in December 1995 as the Glebe Island Bridge. The Anzac Bridge is 805 metres long and can carry up to 180,000 cars per day.
The road deck is only 27 metres above the water, but the two concrete support towers soar up 120 metres above the water.
The design of the bridge was done in-house at the New South Wales Roads and Traffic Authority. This department has since been merged into NSW Roads and Waterways.
Why is it called the Anzac Bridge
In 1998, the Glebe Island Bridge was renamed as the Anzac Bridge. This was in honour of the Anzac soldiers who fought for Australia in the two World Wars. The bridge was renamed on Remembrance Day rather than Anzac Day, however.
The Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park also commemorates the Anzacs.
Anzac Bridge toll
Plenty of Sydney’s major roads have tolls – including the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The Anzac Bridge, however, does not have a toll. Vehicles are free to cross.
