Where is Birkenhead Point brand outlet?

Drummoyne is on the Parramatta River, just before it joins the Lane Cove River and becomes Sydney Harbour (or Port Jackson if you’re being official about it). Birkenhead Point is at the south-eastern tip of Drummoyne, looking east towards Rozelle and Balmain. Look north-east, and there are several Sydney harbour islands, including the largest of them – Cockatoo Island.

But most visitors to Birkenhead Point haven’t come to admire the views. They’re here for the shopping. But while outlet malls elsewhere can be grim, soulless affairs, at least in Sydney’s largest outlet mall there’s a touch of heritage.

The site’s main building was once a salting works, which opened in 1844. Over time it became a tyre factory, which finally closed in 1977. After that, it was developed into a shopping centre as the Drummoyne waterfront deindustrialised.

Birkenhead Point transport: Buses and Drummoyne water taxis

Getting to Sydney’s largest outlet mall is relatively easy. It’s a short drive from Central Sydney (as long as the traffic isn’t horrendous). Otherwise, several buses stop at Victoria Road on the western edge of the outlet mall. Buses to Drummoyne from Sydney CBD include the 500X, 503, 504 and 506. There is a Birkenhead Ferry terminal by the marina, but it doesn’t receive a regular public transport ferry service. If you want to go by water taxi, however, this is where you’ll get dropped off.
