Bar 83: Why drink at the highest bar in Sydney?

Bar 83: Why drink at the highest bar in Sydney?

Bar 83 at the Sydney Tower is the highest bar in Sydney, Australia. You come for the views, although the cocktails are better than they need to be.

On the 83rd floor of the Sydney Tower, Bar 83 is the highest bar in Sydney. No-one’s going to pretend it’s the best bar or cheapest bar in Sydney, but you don’t come to Bar 83 looking for fizzing atmosphere or bargain drinks.

Other Sydney Tower options include the revolving restaurant, observation deck and adrenalin-pumping Skywalk.

How high is Bar 83 in Sydney?

Bar 83 is one floor above Skyfeast, the Sydney Tower revolving restaurant. It’s 245m above street level, and you basically come up here for the views. The floor to ceiling glass windows looking out over the city help give a bird’s eye take on Sydney.

Bar 83 pretends to be more sophisticated than it is. It is basically the preserve of tourists and businesspeople trying to impress visitors. But as long as you’re cool with that, then there’s enough novelty value to make the trip up the super-speedy lift worth it.

Bar 83 entry fee and minimum spend

There’s no entry fee for Bar 83, but there is a minimum $30 per person spend, which is effectively the same thing. Reservations cover you for an hour-and-a-half, after which staff will start making unsubtle hints about someone else needing your table.

That is, of course, unless you splash out for one of the sunset packages. These sunset packages are designed to be romantic – you get to watch the sun go down above Sydney. They get progressively more expensive, but the basic Bar 83 sunset package costs $120 per couple. It includes a two hour reservation, a bottle of prosecco and a small tasting platter of food.

Cocktails at Bar 83

The cocktails are predictably pricy, but at least some thought has gone into them. The Benatar mixes dark rum, port, native bitter, pineapple, lime and tiki bitters for $22. And the strangely purple-looking Ceres offers vodka, lapsang souchong, blueberry, watermelon, buttermilk and ginger beer for $21.

The full drinks menu is available on the Bar 83 website.
