Myrtleford wineries: Why visit Gapsted Wines?

Gapsted Wines offers perhaps the best cellar door and restaurant experience of the Myrtleford wineries in Victoria’s High Country.

The Victorian town of Myrtleford is a great place to visit for lovers of Australian wines. This High Country town south of Beechworth and Yackandandah, but north of the Mount Buffalo National Park. It’s just under an hour’s drive south of Albury-Wodonga.

Best Myrtleford wineries to visit

There are several Myrtleford wineries to explore, most of which have cellar doors open to visitors. Good options include the Homestead Estate, Ferraro Wines, the Feathertop Winery and Billy Button Wines. Eaglerange Estate and Michelini Wines are also amongst the Myrtleford wineries.

Gapsted Wines, just to the north-west of Myrtleford, might well be the best bet, however. Gapsted Wines specialises in cool climate wines, using grapes grown in the Alpine Valley and King Valley. There are some fairly unusual options on the roster, too – Gapsted Wines makes a fiano and a saperavi.

Italian varietals at Gapsted Wines

The Italian community in the region had a strong influence on the wines made by this family-owned winery. Styles such as prosecco, pinot grigio, barbera and sangiovese make a change from the usual Aussie shirazes, semillons and chardonnays.

The Gapsted Wines cellar door is open from 11am to 5pm, Thursday to Monday. Wine-tastings cost $12 – but this includes sampling six wines and a cheese plate.

Gapsted Wines restaurant

The real reason Gapsted Wines has become a tourist destination in its own right, however, is the food. Gourmet Traveller Wine magazine named the Gapsted Wines restaurant as the Alpine Valleys cellar door with the best food in 2021. The a la carte menu offers options such as fish of the day with Moroccan tagine, or fettucine with beef and pork ragout.

But if you want a treat, then opt for the Taste of Season menu. As the name suggests, dishes on this three course menu change with the seasons. But they’re all matched with wine from the Gapsted range. The Taste of Season menu at Gapsted Wines in Myrtleford costs $65, and you can enjoy it with prime views from the decking overlooking the vineyards.
