What to do at Mitchelton Winery, Nagambie

The Mitchelton Winery in Nagambie offers much more than most Goulburn Valley wineries. As well as the cellar door and restaurant, the Mitchelton Winery offers a slick hotel, pool, Aboriginal art gallery and day spa.

There are several wineries in the Goulburn Valley, Victoria. Most of them are open to visitors for wine tasting, too. But the Mitchelton Winery in Nagambie goes a few extra miles.

Mitchelton Winery: The best Goulburn Valley winery?

The Mitchelton Winery is different because of the sheer range of businesses on site. Sure, there’s a cellar door for wine tastings, but there’s also a restaurant, hotel, day spa and Aboriginal art gallery. This Goulburn Valley winery isn’t just somewhere to drop by for a short sampling session – it’s a destination in its own right.

You can hardly miss the Mitchelton Winery – it has a chunky great tower that has become the winery’s symbol. But the property in Nagambie isn’t the whole business – there’s also another estate vineyard in Heathcote, where Shiraz vines are grown.

Mitchelton Winery wine tasting and Muse restaurant

Come to Nagambie for the wine tasting, however. The cellar door offers free, guided tastings of various varietals.

Also on-site is the Muse restaurant, which deals in what it calls “modern farmhouse cuisine”. It uses local produce, such as foraged blackberries and wagyu beef from Euroa. The chef also brings in native Australian ingredients, as the kangaroo tartare with capers, mountain pepper mayo and wattleseed lavosh demonstrates.

Perhaps even more impressive is the Mitchelton Gallery of Aboriginal Art. This brings together art from 15 different regional centres across Australia. The centrepiece is Message Stick Vehicle, a Land Rover painted by 200 different artists.

Mitchelton Winery Hotel

The Mitchelton hotel is another point of difference. There’s none of the chintzy faux-rustic nonsense here – rooms have a strong, sleek look with lots of blacks and greys. There’s also an impressive, long pool looking out over the surrounding bushland. Rooms cost from $309 per night, and can be booked via the Mitchelton website.

Other attractions in Nagambie include the Nagambie Brewery, while cheaper accommodation is available at the Nagambie Lakes Leisure Park.
