Serpentine National Park, Perth Hills: What are the best walks?

The best walks in the Serpentine National Park near Perth include the Baldwin’s Bluff Nature Track from the Serpentine Falls car park, the Kitty’s Gorge Walk Track and Staceys Loop from Jarrahdale.

The Serpentine National Park in the Perth Hills is one of Western Australia’s smaller national parks. But its proximity to Perth makes it hugely popular. It’s not quite as close as Lesmurdie Falls, but arguably worth the extra journey time.

The main attraction is Serpentine Falls, a waterfall cascading down a smoothed granite rock face. But there are more things to do in the Serpentine National Park than cooing at a waterfall.

Walks in the Serpentine National Park

Bushwalkers can tackle one of several Serpentine National Park walks. These include the Baldwin’s Bluff Nature Track, which departs from the Serpentine Falls car park. The Baldwin’s Bluff Nature Track requires a reasonable degree of fitness as it’s mostly along gravel tracks and involves a fair climb up to Baldwin’s Bluff.

At the top of Baldwin’s Bluff, there are great views of Serpentine Falls as well as the coastal plain around the Swan River. On the way, the track passes through jarrah woodlands and over dramatic exposed granite. The return walk stretches over 6km and should take around two hours.

5 great day trips from Perth – make your visit special

Serpentine National Park walks: Kitty’s Gorge Walk Track

If you want a tougher challenge from walks in the Serpentine National Park, try the Kitty’s Gorge Walk Track. Again, this Perth Hills walking trail begins in the Serpentine Falls lower car park.

The walk follows Serpentine Gorge towards Gooralong Brook, then heads into Kitty’s Gorge, where a number of granite outcrops and waterfalls await.

Be warned – the Kitty’s Gorge Walk Track has steeps sections, steps and unstable surfaces. A good fitness level is required. It’s a 14km return trip, and takes around five hours. Set off early, as the gates of the Serpentine Falls car park close at 5pm.

Realistically, though, they might close to new arrivals much earlier than that. Serpentine Falls is hugely popular with visitors, and on weekends the car park can fill up by 10am.

Walks from Jarrahdale in the Darling Range

One way round that is starting the walk from the carpark opposite the cemetery on Atkins Street in Jarrahdale. The problem with this is that the easy, downhill bit comes first, with the tough uphill section on the return leg.

If you want your walk in the Serpentine National Park to start in Jarrahdale, however, there is another option. The 1.9km Staceys Loop is a circuit of moderate difficulty. It takes in handsome jarrah forest and several bridges crossing Goorlong Brook.

Serpentine National Park entry fee

The Serpentine National Park is 55km south-east of Perth. Entry costs $15 per vehicle. For more information, see the Western Australian Parks and Wildlife Service website. Other attractions in Jarrahdale include the Millbrook Winery.

You can also stay at the Serpentine Falls caravan park, which is a 25 minute walk away from Serpentine Falls.
