Kalgoorlie to Perth road trip: Distance, drive time & stops

The 593km drive from Kalgoorlie to Perth takes around 6h30m. It is undeniably one of the most tedious drives in Australia. Road trip stops along the way include the State Barrier Fence at Burracoppin and the No. 1 Pump Station at Mundaring Weir.

A Kalgoorlie to Perth road trip takes you from one of Australia’s biggest mining towns to the Western Australian capital.

There is a surprising array of things to do in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia’s biggest gold mining town. That’s partly because efforts have been made to make it a real place where real people live, rather than a functional fly-in, fly-out mine with basic facilities attached.

But Kalgoorlie is so out of the way that very few people are going to choose to include it in a holiday itinerary.

Kalgoorlie to Perth road trip stops

The exception comes if you’re doing a road trip from Adelaide to Perth across the Nullarbor Plain. Many of the highlights of this journey are on the South Australian leg of the trip, including swimming with Australian sea lions at Baird Bay, the windmills of Penong, the Lake MacDonnell pink lake, surfing at Cactus Beach and whale-watching at Head of Bight. Once over the Western Australian border, there’s the old telegraph station at Eucla, and the Skylab museum at Balladonia, plus a few more holes of the Nullarbor Links.

Once you reach Kalgoorlie, however, it feels like the end of the journey. The romantic hard slog driving of crossing the Nullarbor is over. All that remains is the distinctly unromantic hard slog driving to Perth.
