The drive starts out along National Highway 1, which is called the NW Coastal Highway north of Geraldton. It skirts near Glenfield Beach then continues north through fairly mundane nothingness to the town of Northampton. Here, there’s the option to head west to the quiet but beautiful Horrocks Beach.

Geraldton to Kalbarri drive attractions: Hutt Lagoon and Wagoe Beach

From Northampton, you need to branch off onto the Port Gregory Road. There’s a half decent photo stop at the former Lynton Convict Depot, but the real highlight of Port Gregory is Hutt Lagoon. This is perhaps the most famous of Western Australia’s pink lakes.

Continuing along State Route 139 towards Kalbarri, the Utcha Well Nature Reserve is on the left hand side, while Wagoe Beach is the best detour before you reach the coastal section of the Kalbarri National Park.

West coast road trip attractions: Pot Alley, Mushroom Rock and Blue Holes

Then come all the clifftop lookouts, most of which have a good walk attached to them. Eagle Gorge, Pot Alley, Mushroom Rock, Red Bluff and the Blue Holes are all delightful.

The most famous section of the Kalbarri National Park, however, is not on the coast. If you want Nature’s Window, the Kalbarri Skywalk and the Murchison River Gorge, you’ll have to go inland after the Geraldton to Kalbarri drive reaches its destination.

Kalbarri accommodation options with a pool include the Gecko Lodge B&B and Kalbarri Backpackers YHA. Another option is the Big River Ranch, which runs horse-riding tours.
