Kamilaroi Highway, NSW: Distance, main towns & junctions

The main towns on the Kamilaroi Highway are Quirindi, Gunnedah, Narrabri, Walgett and Bourke. It runs for 605km, connecting the New England, Oxley, Newell, Castlereagh and Mitchell Highways.

The Kamilaroi Highway is one of the key highways through inland New South Wales. It connects several towns, and several other highways over the course of 605km.

The highway is named in honour of the Kamilaroi people who traditionally inhabit some of the region the highway passes through.

Where does the Kamilaroi Highway begin?

In the west, the Kamilaroi Highway begins at the junction with the New England Highway near Willow Tree in New England. The first decent-sized town on the route is Quirindi, and the road continues towards Gunnedah.

Just east of Gunnedah comes the junction with the Oxley Highway.

Kamilaroi Highway towns and junctions

The Kamilaroi Highway then roughly follows the Namoi River towards Boggabri and Narrabri. The junction with the Newell Highway is just south of Narrabri.

This is where the Kamilaroi Highway turns west, and heads into sparsely-populated territory that few travel through. The intersection with the Castlereagh Highway is slightly to the north-east of Walgett.

From there, the Kamilaroi ploughs on remorselessly alongside the Barwon River. It passes through Brewarrina before reaching Bourke on the edge of the true outback. Here, it comes to an end at the junction with the Mitchell Highway in Bourke’s town centre.
