Landsborough Highway, Queensland: Distance, towns & junctions

If you’re doing a road trip through the Queensland outback, chances are you’ll spend plenty of time on the Landsborough Highway. It runs for 1,049km from Morven to Cloncurry.

The Landsborough Highway is one of the main arterial routes through Queensland, Australia. It connects several outback towns, and is the backbone of the journey north from Brisbane to Darwin.

Landsborough Highway distance and fuel stops

The Landsborough Highway runs from Morven to Cloncurry, and is also known as National Highway A2 throughout its entire duration. In total, this outback Queensland highway covers a distance of 1,049km.

This isn’t the sort of outback highway that passes through desert nothingness, with only a few road houses as fuel stops. If you need a fuel stop on the Landsborough Highway, there are several towns along the way with petrol stations.

Landsborough Highway towns and intersections

Beginning at the junction of the Warrego Highway in Morven, the Landsborough Highway soon reaches Augathella. Here, it meets the Mitchell Highway coming from Charleville to the south-west.

The Landsborough Highway then passes through Tambo and Blackall before reaching Barcaldine. There’s another major intersection here, as the Capricorn Highway heads east towards Emerald.

The next major stop is arguably the most appealing town on the entire drive – Longreach. Here, the Landsborough Highway meets the Thomson Developmental Road, which goes south-west towards Windorah.

Where does the Landsborough Highway end?

National Highway A2 continues north to Winton, where it meets the Kennedy Developmental Road. Depending on which direction you go, this will take you to either Boulia or Hughenden.

After Winton, you’re on the final stretch. The Landsborough Highway then passes through Kynuna and McKinlay, before reaching Cloncurry. Here, it meets the Flinders Highway coming from the east and the Barkly Highway coming from the Northern Territory to the west.
