The first reasonable road trip stop after leaving Orange is Mortimers Wines in March. The cellar door here is inside an old schoolhouse. The next villages are Clergate and Mullions Creek. The latter is the gateway to the Mullions Range State Conservation Area. Unfortunately, the main walking tracks are nearer Orange, and a bit of an excessive diversion off Burrendong Way.

Orange to Dubbo drive: Lake Burrendong

You’re better off saving your energy for Lake Burrendong, formed by the Burrendong Dam over the Macquarie River. The lake offers fishing, bushwalks, water sports, plus the Burrendong Botanic Garden and Arboretum.

The turn-off for the most visitor-friendly section of the lake comes just after the village of Mumbil.
