Port Macquarie weather: When is the best time to visit the Mid North Coast?

The Port Macquarie weather is hot and rather wet in summer, mild and fairly dry in winter. October is arguably the best time to visit Port Macquarie on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales.

Port Macquarie is one of the most attractive towns on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. It’s one of the best places to break the journey on the Sydney to Byron Bay drive. Key tourist attractions include the famous koala sanctuary, the Bago Maze and Lighthouse Beach camel rides.

But the Port Macquarie weather plays a big part in when it’s best time to visit the Mid North Coast. The Port Macquarie climate is not massively dissimilar to Sydney’s. But, it’s further north, and therefore Port Macquarie is usually a couple of degrees hotter than Sydney.

Port Macquarie weather: Hottest month

The hottest month in Port Macquarie is January. According to Bureau of Meteorology’s historic weather data, the mean daily maximum temperature for Port Macquarie is 28°C. Given the mean daily minimum temperature is 18.6°C, that can get uncomfortably hot. Seeing as Port Macquarie accommodation fills up during the NSW school holidays in January, ramping up prices too, this is a month to avoid.

December, February and March are only a degree or so cooler. November and April, with mean daily maximum temperatures of 25.4°C and 24.4°C respectively are just a little less sticky.

Port Macquarie never gets truly cold, however. The Port Macquarie weather is at its coldest in July, and even then, the mean daily maximum temperature is 19°C. Nights are cooler, though, with a mean daily minimum of 6.4°C.

Port Macquarie rainfall and best time to visit Port Macquarie

Rainfall is perhaps a bigger consideration than temperature. Most of Port Macquarie’s rain falls between November and June, with February and March being particularly heavy. An average of 197mm falls in March, compared to 58.8mm in lowest rainfall month September.

The best time to visit the Mid North Coast, therefore, is probably October. This is a sweet spot month for the Port Macquarie weather, with 75.4mm of rainfall and mean daily maximum temperatures of 24.1°C.
