Why are Australian beaches so great?

Australia does beaches better than anywhere else in the world. Yes, that’s a bold claim, but nowhere else can match the variety AND quality.

Surf beaches are what Australia is best known for, to the point where an entire surfing industry has built up around them. These top surf beaches can be found all over the country, with hotspots including Noosa in Queensland, Margaret River in Western Australia, and the Great Ocean Road in Victoria.

Beaches in Australia also offer several wildlife experiences. In the South-West, it’s possible to hang out with the stingrays of Hamelin Bay. At Cape Hillsborough in Queensland, you can see kangaroos on the beach. It’s possible to go kayaking with seals from the beach in Apollo Bay, Victoria, or kayaking with dolphins from Byron Bay, New South Wales.

In Western Australia, the Ningaloo Reef runs within 100 metres of the Cape Range National Park, while Portsea in Victoria offers close encounters with weedy sea dragons.

Then there are the cute beach towns which are just a delight to hang out in. Rainbow Beach or Mooloolaba in Queensland, Yamba in New South Wales and Lorne in Victoria are classic examples.

You don’t have to go too far for beaches either. Australia’s cities have great beach options, too. In Sydney, you can choose to stay at Bondi, and maybe learn to surf there too. Alternatively, swim in the surf at Bronte or enjoy several cute harbour beaches. St Kilda is Melbourne’s classic beachside suburb. Meanwhile, Perth has Scarborough and Cottesloe on the Indian Ocean.

Australian island beaches

Then there are the island beaches. On Fraser Island, four wheel drive vehicles drive up 75 Mile Beach past the Maheno shipwreck. Meanwhile perfect white sand can be found on Rottnest Island near Perth, Wineglass Bay in Tasmania and the Whitsundays in Queensland.

It might not always be hot in Australia, but the beaches are so good, they’re usually worth donning a wetsuit for.
