Aside from the wine, Ballandean’s main advantage is that it is sandwiched between two national parks. To the west, you’ll need a 4WD to visit the main section of Sundown National Park. If you’ve got one, though, it’s worth heading to the Red Rock Gorge Lookout.

More accessible, and with plenty more options, is Girraween National Park. It lies to the east of Ballandean, and the Bald Rock Creek day use area is the easiest base to reach.

Here, the classic walk is the steep schlep to the top of the Pyramid – a massive granite peak. At the top, Balancing Rock makes for a great photo.

Another option is the walk to Castle Rock further south. There are fantastic 360 degree views from the top.
