Boulia, Queensland, is about as outback as an outback town can get. It is a long way from anywhere of size, and you’ll have to take a long detour to include it in any logical tourist itinerary.

Where is Boulia, Queensland?

So where is Boulia? Well, it’s in western Queensland, fairly near the Northern Territory border. It’s 362km along the Kennedy Developmental Road west of Winton, home of the Waltzing Matilda Centre. Boulia is also a 289km drive south of Mount Isa, and 235km north of Bedourie.

Boulia lies just north of the Tropic of Capricorn, and the main reason to take this massive detour is the mysterious Min Min Light.

The Min Min Light is a phenomenon thought by some to be supernatural, others to be extraterrestrial. It looks similar to a car headlight, appears just after dark, and follows people down the highway for miles.

Now, the cynical might suggest that this is just a car headlight. But the ball of light in the sky is seen when there are no other cars around, and has been reported for more than a century.

Things to do in Boulia, Queensland: Min Min Encounter

Top of the list of things to do in Boulia, therefore, is the Min Min Encounter. This animatronic presentation introduces characters who have seen the Min Min Light. It’s cheesy but fun.

Beyond the Min Min Encounter, the main attraction in Boulia is the Stone House Museum. Built in 1888, the stone house is one of the oldest buildings in western Queensland. Inside is a middling collection of fossils and Aboriginal artefacts.
