Cookernup, WA, is a small town in the Peel region to the south of Perth. To be honest, calling Cookernup a town is a bit of a stretch – this is basically a village on the South Western Highway, sandwiched between Yarloop and Harvey.

Moojelup Farm proudly bills itself as a boutique winery, with a single vintage philosophy. This means that they’re happy to allow the wines to taste different from one year to the next.

There’s also a proud use of traditional methods, which means the red wines are produced using open fermentation and basket-pressing. These reds tend to be full-bodied with plenty of regional character and fruit intensity.

The other Cookernup winery is the Harvey Springs Estate, which produces Barton and Barton wines.

But a stop in Cookernup, WA, isn’t just about wine. Top of the list of things to do in Cookernup has to be a visit to Logue Brook Dam, which has created the Lake Brockman reservoir.

This beauty spot at the western edge of the sprawling Lane Poole Reserve is popular for all manner of outdoor activities. Water skiers stay near the Logue Brook campground, while elsewhere on Lake Brockman, you can go swimming, fishing and kayaking. There are also good mountain bike trails leaving from the campground.
