Dimboola, Victoria, is not the most exciting town in Australia. You will, however, pass through on the main inland route from Adelaide to Melbourne, and it’s a decent enough place for a stop. You’ll also pass through Dimboola if driving from Ballarat to Adelaide.

Dimboola is in the Wimmera region, north-west of the Grampians, and is best used as the gateway to the Little Desert National Park.

What to do in Dimboola, Victoria: Little Desert National Park

Most of the Little Desert National Park’s best walks and campgrounds are in the eastern end near Dimboola. The 1km Pomponderoo Hill Nature Hill Walk is a decent leg-stretcher if you just want to break the journey. This heads up to a lookout taking in the Wimmera River.

Even nearer the town, and neighbouring the national park, is the Snape Reserve. This 846 hectare reserve contains a wide variety of animal habitats. These include river red gum swamps, cypress pine woodland and heathland. Again, walking is the main attraction here, and there’s plenty of wildlife to look out for. Among the native creatures spotted at the Snape Reserve are brush-tailed possums, echidnas, red kangaroos, black wallabies and sugar gliders.

Things to do in Dimboola, Victoria: Pink Lake

Also on the list of things to do in Dimboola, Victoria, should be a visit to the Pink Lake. It’s just north-west of the town, next to the Western Highway. Like Lake Bumbunga or Lake MacDonnell in South Australia, it’s a salt lake that turns varying shades of pink due to algae. There’s a rest area and toilet next to the Dimboola Pink Lake if you want to stop for a photo.
