Kilcunda, Victoria, is a small town in the Bass Coast region of Gippsland. You might pass through if driving from Phillip Island to other towns along the Bass Highway, such as Wonthaggi and Inverloch.

The list of things to do in Kilcunda is pretty small, but it’s a pleasant enough, relatively undeveloped beach town.

Things to do in Kilcunda, Victoria: Beaches

Unsurprisingly, Kilcunda’s main attractions are the beaches. Shelley Beach and Kilcunda East Beach both have their fans, and can attract some pretty wild surf. They’re better spots for fishing off the rocks than swimming. The rocks make swimming fairly hazardous.

Part of Kilcunda’s appeal, however, is that the beaches can be strung together, as there’s plenty of green space behind them. The Nyora-Wonthaggi Rail Trail, once a railway line and now a walking and cycling track, passes behind them. It continues over the Kilcunda Trestle Bridge, a handsome wooden bridge which crosses the mouth of Bourne Creek, offering rather lovely views.

Continue south-east along the coast, and you reach the mouth of the Powlett River. Here, the Powlett River caravan park provides accommodation and there are good views from the Mouth of the Powlett.

Things to do in Kilcunda, Victoria: The Killy Pub

Back in what passes for the centre of Kilcunda, life revolves around the Kilcunda Ocean View Hotel. Known to most as the Killy Pub, the Kilcunda Ocean View Hotel has 180 degree views of the southern ocean from its verandah.

The Killy pub serves up pub classics, including flake, chicken parma and porterhouse steak. But the rest of the menu has a Latin twist, courtesy of the Cuban chef.
