Kings Beach, Sunshine Coast: What is there to do?

Kings Beach in Caloundra on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast offers beginner-friendly surfing, affordable accommodation, a big saltwater pool and surfing lessons at the North Caloundra Surf School.

Kings Beach in Caloundra is one of several excellent beaches on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. There are excellent alternatives at Noosa, Mooloolaba, Marcoola, Coolum and Mudjimba.

The strength of Kings Beach, however, is that it’s very family-friendly. It’s Caloundra’s main surf beach and home to the Caloundra Surf Club. Should you not want to get into the see, then there is a massive saltwater pool built into the coastline outside the Caloundra Surf Club. There’s a 25 metre lap pool, wading area and separate children’s pool. There are also plenty of rock pools to explore nearby, should the sight of men in budgie-smugglers by the pool get too distressing.

Surfing at Kings Beach, Caloundra

But the surf at Kings Beach is rarely all that fearsome, which makes it a good surf beach for children and beginners.

Kings Beach waves in Caloundra
Kings Beach is the main surf beach in Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast.

The reason the Kings Beach surf doesn’t et up all that high is that the top end of Moreton Island provides a degree of protection from the ocean swells. The surf is reasonably consistent, just not very big – although the breaks near the rips at either end of the beach tend to be a little bigger.

The presence of the Caloundra Surf Club makes it one of the safest ocean beaches for swimming, too. Conditions are generally swimmer-friendly anyway, but the lifeguards add an extra layer of protection.

Caloundra checklist: 5 fab experiences to book in advance

1. Kayak hire or paddleboard rental at Golden Beach. 2. Self-guided scavenger hunt. 3. Half day Pummicestone Passage jetski tour. 4. Waterways cruise. 5. Two hour Efoil lesson.

Things to do at Kings Beach: Surfing lessons

It’s also possible to take surfing lessons at Kings Beach. The North Caloundra Surf School operates from here. The beginner group lessons with the North Caloundra Surf School cost $50, and they should have you standing on the board by the end of the lesson.

Kings Beach accommodation: Rolling Surf Resort and more

The other major reason to considered staying at Kings Beach is that it can be pretty cheap. No-one’s going to pretend this is a quiet, unspoilt stretch of coastline. But the development means there are dozens of options to choose from, and competition keeps prices down.

Most Kings Beach accommodation options are apartments, but there are also some resort hotels.

The four star Rolling Surf Resort has perhaps the best location, close to the sand. But other options include the Ultiqa Shearwater Resort next to the Caloundra Surf Club and Kings Beach Pool.

Highlights elsewhere in Caloundra include the Moffat Beach Brewing Co at Moffat Beach and the Dicky Beach Surf Club. You can also go kayaking on the Pumicestone Passage from Golden Beach. Meanwhile, the Aussie World theme park is a short drive to the north.
