Koondrook, Victoria, is a small town on the Murray River. Hug the river route, and you’ll pass through on the drive from Echuca to Swan Hill.

Barham on the New South Wales side of the Murray River tends to have more to offer visitors, but there is plenty of heritage in Koondrook. Historically, this is where many of the Murray River paddlesteamers have been built.

Things to do in Koondrook, Victoria: Statue River Walk

Things to do in Koondrook, Victoria, include the Koondrook Barham Redgum Statue River Walk. This art trail winds through both Koondrook and Barham, past statues carved out of trees.

The other walk worth tackling in Koondrook, Victoria, is the Koondrook Red Gum Forest Walk, for which there are two routes. This starts at Condidorio’s Bridge on Gunbower Creek, with the trails heading through the Gunbower State Forest.

Koondrook Walks: Turtle Loop and Eagle Loop

The 13.km Turtle Loop and 9.1km Eagle Loop both take in Ramsar-listed wetland and red gum forests. Signs along the trail tell the tales of pioneers and the Indigenous Barapa Barapa people. There are Aboriginal scar trees, middens and stone tools along the walk.

There’s also a strong chance of seeing kangaroos. Loads of them live on Gunbower Island, although your best chances of sightings come on the Gunbower Island Forest Drive in the Gunbower National Park near Cohuna.

Things to do in Koondrook, Victoria: Gunbower Island Canoe Trail

Winding around Gunbower Island is the Koondrook track, which heads through the Gannawarra wetlands. More than 150 species of birds have been spotted here. The Gunbower Island Canoe Trail is by the Koondrook Track as well, starting from Safes Lagoon.

This 5km canoeing trail is fairly easy going, and there’s plenty of wetland wildlife-spotting to attempt on the way. Look for sea eagles up above and platypus down below.

Koondrook activities: Wetlander cruises

Also on the list of things to do in Koondrook, Victoria, is a dining cruise with Wetlander Cruises. The cruises last one-and-a-half hours to two-and-a-half hours, depending on the time of day. The Saturday and Sunday dinner cruises serve up three courses.
