Mingenew, Western Australia: Things to do and attractions

Things to do in Mingenew, Western Australia, include taking in the wildflowers from Mingenew Hill and marvelling at the giant grain facility.

Mingenew, Western Australia, is a northern wheatbelt town primarily occupied with the collection, storage and shipping of grain. It doesn’t feature on too many tourist itineraries, but it does have one key string to its bow.

If you’re into seeing wildflowers, this is arguably one of the best places in Australia to do it.

Things to do in Mingenew, Western Australia: Wildflower viewing

Chances are, if you’re in Mingenew for the wildflower viewing, your target will be Coalseam Conservation Park to the north. This national park is famous for its springtime carpets of colour, as well as cliffs showing millions of years of fossil formation.

But there are also some good places to take in views closer to the town. Mingenew Hill is the traditional starting point. The lookout offers expansive views over the countryside and town. Again, it’s colourful during wildflower season.

Things to do in Mingenew, Western Australia: Depot Hill

Another alternative is Depot Hill, about 12km to the north-west of town. Here, you can take in the rocky outcrops around the Irwin River as well as the flowers.

But are there any things to do in Mingenew, Western Australia, itself? Well, to put it charitably, there’s not much to hold your attention.

Mingenew attractions: Grain facility and wheat sculpture

You can ogle the giant Co-operative Bulk Handling grain facility, which is apparently the largest inland facility of the type in Australia. You can also make a cheesy photo stop at the giant wheat sculpture in Cecil Newton Park.

The Mingenew Museum, meanwhile, does the dusty local history thing. For more information, visit the Mingenew Shire Council website.
