Things to do in Port Broughton, South Australia: Your cheat sheet

The best things to do in Port Broughton, South Australia, include fishing from the jetty and learning about the wheat industry at the Port Broughton Heritage Centre.

Port Broughton, South Australia, is a sleepy coastal town at the far northern end of the Yorke Peninsula. For anyone heading from Adelaide to Port Augusta, it’s a relatively short diversion off the Augusta Highway, and a much more appealing prospect than industrial Port Pirie.

Once a wheat-shipping town, Port Broughton has reorientated itself towards holiday makers and retirees. The pleasures are pretty simple – this is somewhere you come to for beach time and not an awful lot else.

Things to do in Port Broughton, South Australia: Fishing charters

The Port Broughton Jetty tends to be the centre of attention. It’s where people go for a stroll in the evening. During the day, it’s popular with fishermen, with yellowfin often caught from the jetty.

However, Port Broughton’s reputation as a fishing destination is largely based on the snapper, which hang out further into the Spencer Gulf. Snapper Safaris is among the operators offering Port Broughton fishing charters.

Port Broughton Historic Walking Trail

Otherwise, Port Broughton has a handful of handsome heritage buildings. Most of these link together on the Port Broughton Historic Walking Trail. Pick up a leaflet at the Visitor Information Centre opposite the Port Broughton Hotel to help plot your route.

For more history, head to the Port Broughton Heritage Centre. This is your classic local history museum, complete with eccentric opening hours. The highlights are the mildly disturbing doll collection and the section on the wheat trade.

Things to do in Port Broughton, South Australia: Beaches

Because Port Broughton is on an inlet called Munderoo Bay, its beaches don’t compare to those further south such as Port Hughes and Wauraltee Beach. The tidal flats mean you can only really go swimming at Port Broughton Beach when it’s high tide.

It’s feasible to use Port Broughton as a base for exploring the Copper Coast. But if the Copper Coast is your target, you’re better off staying in Kadina, Moonta or Wallaroo.
