Romsey, Victoria, is one of several reasonably appealing towns in the Macedon Ranges. Due to lying west of the Calder Freeway, it doesn’t get as many visitors as Sunbury, Gisborne, Woodend or Kyneton. However, you might consider Romsey worth a detour if driving from Melbourne to Mildura.

Romsey’s streetscape is a slice of classic Australiana, with gothic bluestone churches and houses made of corrugated iron. But the real reason to visit is the wineries. It’s an enjoyable small town to walk around, and there are a few cafés should you fancy lunch or a coffee.

Things to do in Romsey, Victoria: Macedon Ranges wineries

There are a few wineries scattered in and around Romsey. Most prominent of these is Mount Monument. Cooler climate wines are the speciality at Mount Monument Wines, so expect pinot noirs and rieslings along with the chardonnays.

Just further west along the Romsey Road is the Botanica Estate Vineyard and Winery. This vineyard is essentially at the base of Mount Macedon. Botanica Estate proudly boasts of having one of the highest and coldest vineyards in Victoria – it’s 630 metres above sea level.

The winemakers reckon this is perfect for growing chardonnay, pinot noir, pinot meunier and gewürztraminer grapes.

Other Romsey wineries worth a look include the Midhill Vineyard, Kilchurn Wines and Parkside Winery Estate.

Romsey to Lancefield Federation Trail

The other visitors who might find some appeal in Romsey, Victoria, are cyclists. The Romsey to Lancefield Federation Trail is 15.9km return, and heads through some bucolic farmland.

The path is shared with pedestrians, and is relatively flat for most of the trip.
