Strathmerton, Victoria, is a small town on the Murray River between Albury and Echuca. It’s neighbouring towns are Barooga and Tocumwal in New South Wales, plus Cobram in Victoria.

Things to do in Strathmerton mostly focus on the Murray River and the channels branching off it. Just north of Strathmerton is Ulupna Island, which is well known for its kangaroos, koalas and bird life. The island is also a popular camping destination. Otherwise, the main Strathmerton accommodation option is the Gazebo Motor Inn.

Tocumwal Regional Park follows a stretch of the Murray River on Ulupna Island, and this is where you’ll find Finley Beach. This is one of the most popular river beaches along the Murray, but Ulupna Beach and Carter Beach are closer. Pretty much head directly north from Strathmerton until you reach the river, and you’ll find them. Check track conditions before you go, however – some tracks on Ulupna Island can be iffy after rain.

Aside from the Strathmerton pub, the other main attraction in Strathmerton is Cactus Country. This gloriously photogenic cactus farm hosts thousands of cactuses from hundreds of species. It brings a little taste of Mexico to the Murray, and when you walk the trails through the gardens, you start to realise just how much variety the cactus world has. Cactus Country is part of the Murray Farm Gate Trail from Albury to Echuca.
