Tallarook, Victoria, is a classic pass-through town on the Hume Highway. This town in the Shire of Mitchell is 98km north of Melbourne. You’ll whizz through on the drive from Melbourne to Albury or Melbourne to Canberra. It’s also on the Shepparton to Melbourne train line.

Things to do in Tallarook, Victoria: Mount Hickey in the Tallarook Ranges

Tallarook, Victoria, is best used as a base rather than a destination in its own right. The best things to do in Tallarook are realistically a few kilometres out of the town itself. The Tallarook State Forest is to the south-east, and has a series of walking trails, camping areas and picnic spots.

The Tallarook State Forest is part of the Tallarook Ranges, and the (literal) high point is Mount Hickey. Around 800 metres above sea level, Mount Hickey isn’t really a mountain. But the 2.7km walking trail up to the summit is a good challenge. This tough Tallarook Ranges walk offers good views down the valley between the gaps in the trees.

Things to do in Tallarook: Kerrisdale Mountain Railway and Tallarook pub

Also nearby is the Kerrisdale Mountain Railway and Museum. This zig-zagging hillside railway climbs steep gradients, with the journeys to the summit station costing $15. The Kerrisdale Mountain Railway trains run Thursday to Monday, although departures are subject to minimum numbers.

In Tallarook itself, the highlights are the Tallarook Bushland Reserve and Tallarook pub. The Tallarook Bushland Reserve is a public park deliberately kept wild. The Tallarook pub – officially, the Tallarook Hotel – is a pretty decent stop by country town pub standards.

Other things to do in Tallarook, Victoria, include winery visits. Local wineries include the Trawool Estate, Vino Quarantino and the Many Hands Vineyard.
