Things to do in Corowa, NSW: Corowa museums

Max’s Motor Museum is strictly for car enthusiasts only – it’s basically one man’s loving collection of old cars.

More interesting, albeit clearly presented on a budget, is the Corowa Federation Museum inside the former Border Brass Band Hall. The museum tells the story of how Australia became a country rather than a collection of British colonies. Corowa’s part in the tale – a Federation League rally in 1893 – is also a key driving force.

Corowa attractions: Whisky and chocolate tasting

But Australia Travel Questions’ favourite stop in Corowa is flour mill from the 1920s. The handsome, red brick Corowa Milling Company building now hosts a whisky distillery and chocolate factory. Corowa Whisky and Chocolate offers a marvellous range of tastings – three whiskies for $10, or whisky and chocolate pairings for $20.

The huge function room is full of barrels, the on-site café offers extremely tempting cakes and the smells wafting from the chocolate-making room are fabulous. Corowa Whisky and Chocolate even sells a $50 chocolate pizza with different-flavoured slices.

Things to do in Corowa, NSW: Savernake Station and All Saints winery

A short drive out of Corowa, the Savernake Station is a historic pastoral property that has branched out into tourism. It’s on the New South Wales heritage list, and offers farmstay accommodation. Day tours around the property are available by arrangement, too. These take in Aboriginal cultural sites, landcare sites, the 1886 homestead, plus the old woolshed and shearers’ quarters.

Just over the Victorian border is the underrated Rutherglen wine region. Among the more interesting wineries to visit around Rutherglen include Chambers Rosewood winery. This historic winery is in the sixth generation of family ownership. There’s also the All Saints winery in Wahgunyah, which has its own castle.

The other cellar door worth visiting in Rutherglen is Morris Wines. This long-standing winery gets plenty of acclaim for its fortified wines.
