Where is Beaufort, Victoria?

Beaufort, Victoria, is a town on the Western Highway between Ballarat and the Grampians. As such, most tourists will whizz through on the way from Adelaide to Melbourne, or Melbourne to Halls Gap.

Those who stop, however, will find a highly moochable town with handsome 1850s architecture. There are also several cafés, such as Magnolia’s Wine Bar and Café, to enjoy.

Shopping in Beaufort, Victoria, is surprisingly good, too. There’s a good antiques and collectables scene, as ably demonstrated by Beaufort Big Garage Sale and De Baere House Antiques. There are plenty of small, quirky shops, too. The Tangled Vine, for example, has a big focus on chocolates and collectable bears.

Other things to do in Beaufort include picnicking at Beaufort Lake and wandering through the Beaufort Memorial Rose Garden. Beaufort Lake is good for fishing, too – it is well stocked with trout. The Beaufort Memorial Rose Garden is really thoughtfully planted, with flower beds symbolising aspects of the First World War.

Things to do in Beaufort, Victoria: Mount Buangor State Park

But Beaufort is best used as a base for walking. Mount Buangor State Park is a 20 minute drive to the north-west, and there are several good walking trails here. The 1km walk from the Ferntree campground gives a highlight reel, passing both Cascade Falls and Ferntree Falls. There are, however, longer walks in Mount Buangor State Park, plus plenty of wildlife to see on the way. Wallabies, kangaroos, echidnas and koalas all hang out here.

Beerimpo Walking Track near Beaufort, Victoria

The biggest walk near Beaufort, however, is the Beeripmo Walking Track. This Grade 4, 20.6km walk winds through Mount Buangor State Park and the neighbouring Mount Cole State Forest. It’s best tackled over two days, but can be done in one.

Go in spring, and you’ll see a carpet of orchids and wildflowers. At any other time, reaching the peak of Mount Buangor is arguably the highlight.
