Things to do in Collie, WA – get the insider knowledge

The best things to do in Collie, WA, include the Coalfields Museum, Collie Mural Trail, Wellington National Park and Black Diamond Lake.

Collie, WA, is a small town surrounded by forests in the south-west of the state. It’s about 59km inland from Bunbury, and is best used as a gateway to the great outdoors.

There are, however, a few things to do in Collie itself. The Coalfields Museum explores the area’s coal-mining past, while the Collie Art Gallery has rotating exhibitions. The Collie Art Gallery also acts as a shop for local artists.

The most impressive art isn’t inside the gallery, however. The Collie Mural Trail links together 40 murals, which stretch throughout the town to Wellington Dam. The biggest is saved for last – Guido van Helten’s 8,000 square metre mural on the Wellington Dam wall is a gargantuan effort.

Wellington Dam forms part of Wellington National Park, to the west of Collie, but it’s not the only thing to see in the park. Honeymoon Pool on the Preston River is popular for swimming and kayaking. Camping is allowed here, as it is at fellow popular picnic spot Potters Gorge.

There are also several bushwalking and mountain bike trails in the Wellington National Park. These are covered in detail at the Trails WA website.

Things to do in Collie, WA: Black Diamond Lake

Even closer is Black Diamond Lake, an attraction about 5km west of Collie in Allanson. In recent years, Black Diamond Lake has become something of an Instagram favourite, largely due to the unusual bright turquoise colour of the water. But this decontaminated former mine site has been a hit with kayakers, families and picnickers for years. Dodge the selfie-takers, and you can have a delightful time.

Just south of Collie is yet another lovely swimming spot. Minninup Pool doesn’t have the same wealth of facilities, although upgrades to the foreshore are planned, but it’s still a beautiful place for a dip. You can reach Minninup Pool on the easy-going, 9km Collie River Walk, which meanders around the town.

Wallet-friendly Collie accommodation options include the Colliefields and the Black Diamond Lodge.

Other beauty spots relatively close to Collie include the Logue Brook Dam near Harvey, Lake Navarino near Waroona and the Lane Poole Reserve.
