Where is Griffith, NSW?

Griffith, NSW, is one of the major urban hubs in the Riverina region. You’ll pass through on an inland road trip from Melbourne to Cairns or Melbourne to Airlie Beach.

Griffith likes to bill itself as Australia’s food bowl, and it’s no surprise to learn that agriculture is the big money-spinner in these parts.

There are a few things to do in Griffith, NSW, for visitors, however. First up are the two staples of regional Australian towns – the regional art gallery and the local history museum. The Griffith Regional Art Gallery and Griffith Pioneer Park Museum tick these boxes. Don’t expect anything awe-inspiring from either. They fit strictly in the rainy day if you happen to be in town box.

Things to do in Griffith, NSW: Lake Wyangan and Cocoparra National Park

If it’s not a rainy day, however, there are more appealing outdoor attractions in Griffith. Lake Wyangan on the site of a former gypsum mine is ten minutes to the north of the town centre, and is a good spot for picnics and barbecues.

To the north-east, you’ll find the Cocoparra National Park. Here, there are several walking tracks to enjoy. The 4.6km Mount Brogden walking track should give the legs a thorough workout as it climbs to a fine lookout over the Murrumbidgee River. The shorter Falcon Falls walking track is particularly good for birdwatching. There’s a good chance of spotting nesting peregrine falcons.

Things to do in Griffith, NSW: Griffith wineries

But Griffith’s real strength is in wine tourism. There are several wineries around Griffith, although not all are open to visitors. It’s the sort of spot where grapes are grown in large quantities, then sold to winemakers elsewhere.

Griffith wineries that do have cellar doors open to the public include Warburn Estate, Yarran Wines, the Dee Vine Estate, Wickham Hill Winery and Calabria Family Wines. You can self-drive around them, but this will obviously limit your tasting experience. A wine tour with the likes of Bella Vita Riverina Tours is probably a better bet.
