Gundagai, NSW, is one of Australia’s iconic country towns. It’s one of those names that conjures up bushmen, shearers, big hats and hard work under a blazing sun.

The list of things to do in Gundagai isn’t exactly massive, though. This Riverina town is, to most visitors, simply somewhere you go past on the Hume Highway on the way from Sydney to Albury or Melbourne to Canberra.

In the town itself, there are a couple of museums. The Gundagai Historical Museum is a classic volunteer-run regional museum that’s little more than a collection of stuff. However, that stuff includes a Model T Ford and Phar Lap’s saddlecloth. For the uninitiated, Phar Lap is Australia’s most famous racehorse.
