Things to do in Ingham, Queensland: What are the best attractions?

The best things to do in Ingham, Queensland, include the TYTO Wetlands, Mercer Lane Mosaics and Aboriginal tours at Mungalla Station. Other Ingham attractions include Jourama Falls and Wallaman Falls.

Ingham, Queensland, is a decent staging post on the Townsville to Mission Beach section of the Townsville to Cairns drive. It is primarily a sugar cane town, but it has a surprisingly strong Italian heritage. You’ll find those Italian influences in Ingham’s restaurants.

Things to do in Ingham, Queensland: TYTO Wetlands and Mercer Lane Mosaics

Things to do in Ingham include visiting the TYTO Wetlands. This protected nature sanctuary is primarily of interest to birdwatchers. More than 230 different bird species, some of them pretty rare, have been spotted here. Come early morning or late afternoon, and you’ll see dozens of agile wallabies mooching around. There are also 4km of walking trails, with interpretive panels explaining what you’re seeing.

The TYTO Wetlands are about 800 metres out of town, just off the Bruce Highway. In the town itself, Ingham attractions include the TYTO Regional Art Museum, which is predictably mediocre. More enjoyable on the art front are the Mercer Lane Mosaics. These mosaics, covering aspects of Ingham’s history and character, stretch for around 50 metres from JK’s Deli.

Things to do in Ingham, Queensland: Mungalla Station and Hinchinbrook Lookout

To learn about the local Aboriginal culture, take the drive down towards Forrest Beach and stop at Mungalla Station. The Mungalla Station tours are run by the local Nywaigi people. They include learning how to throw a boomerang, and cover the often bloody treatments the Nywaigi received at the hands of settlers.

Indeed, Ingham is best used as a base to explore the local area. 19km north of town on the Bruce Highway is the Hinchinbrook Lookout, which looks out over creeks and wetlands to the rumpled folds of Hinchinbrook Island.

What to do in Ingham, Queensland: Jourama Falls and Wallaman Falls

To the south, there’s the northern end of the Paluma Range National Park. Here, you can walk to the multi-tiered Jourama Falls and swim in Waterview Creek’s swimming holes.

But the tallest waterfall in Australia lies to the west. Wallaman Falls is in the Girringun National Park. The drive from Ingham is along a winding road through the rainforest. Once at Wallaman Falls, the main lookout is a short stroll from the car park.

Ingham accommodation

There aren’t many options for Ingham accommodation. But at the cheaper end of the scale, there’s the Ingham Tourist Park.

Otherwise, the Tropixx Motel has slightly more to it than the Motel Ingham.
