Best things to do in Inverloch, Victoria – free visitor guide

The best things to do in Inverloch, Victoria, include swimming at Inverloch Beach, the Bunurong Environment Centre and snorkelling from Eagle’s Nest.

Inverloch, Victoria, is perhaps the most appealing seaside town on Gippsland’s Bass Coast. It’s at the mouth of Anderson Inlet, an estuary system with low tide mud flats that are good for birdwatching. The Ayr Creek Walk is the easiest way to explore here. This 3.4km trail should take about an hour and you’re likely to see honeyeaters and black-shouldered kites along the way.

Things to do in Inverloch, Victoria: Inverloch Beach

There is a protected beach at Anderson Inlet, but Inverloch’s centrepiece is the surf beach. It’s still relatively protected, but the big sandy flats give Inverloch Beach a wild feel, and it’s very popular with families. Frankly, the whole coastline around Inverloch is gorgeous, and that’s why it has become a popular holiday town in the first place.

Things to do in Inverloch, Victoria: The Caves and Eagles Nest

Head west of Inverloch, past the RACV Inverloch Resort, and there are several attractions worth visiting. The Caves has a small beach, but much more of interest are the big rock formations behind it. The ocean has hollowed out a big rock arch here, and inside it is notoriously famous for fossil finds. There are fossil digs every year, but for non-archaeologists, the Caves simply looks cool.

Further west along in the Bunurong Coastal Reserve, you’ll find Eagles Nest. This is a big stack of sandstone, caused by erosion. It’s particularly photogenic at low tide when it stands above the uncovered rock flats.

In the right conditions, Eagles Nest is also a good place for snorkelling. The surrounding Bunurong Marine National Park protects aquatic life from fishing, and it is abundant. However, you really need a southerly wind to keep the water flat and the visibility good.

Bunurong Environment Centre and Dirty Three Wines

Away from the ocean, the main Inverloch attraction is the Bunurong Environment Centre.

This isn’t exactly the most whizz-bang museum in the world, so don’t go expecting lots of fancy interactive exhibits. Still, if you’re into shell collections and dinosaur fossil exhibitions, the Bunurong Environment Centre is the place for you.

Should you be in the mood for something more indulgent, Dirty Three Wines is open for tastings. This Bass Coast winery specialises in pinot noir.
