Things to do in Leura, NSW

The best things to do in Leura, NSW, include Everglades House, the Leuralla Toy and Railway Museum and the Sublime Point Lookout walk.

Leura, NSW, is arguably the most attractive of the towns and villages that make up the Blue Mountains region. It’s next to tourist hub Katoomba, but has an air of refinement and artistry about it.

Leura’s vibe partly comes from the number of early 20th century houses, many of which have been turned into boutique hotels or B&Bs. Attractive Leura accommodation options include Brightlands and the Old Leura Dairy.

Things to do in Leura, NSW: Everglades House and Leuralla

Everglades House is arguably the most famous of these handsome buildings. Run by the National Trust of NSW, Everglades House offers art deco architecture and impressive gardens. The gardens cover 5.2 hectares and have panoramic views over the Jamison Valley to Mt Solitary.

Other things to do in Leura include visiting the Leuralla Toy and Railway Museum. Again set inside an early 20th century mansion, Leuralla claims to be the “Southern Hemisphere’s largest collection of toys, trains and associated memorabilia”.

The model railways are the stars here, but some will love the collections of Barbie, Tintin and Alice In Wonderland toys.

Another major string to Leura’s bow is Leura Mall. In most country towns, the main shopping area is a bland, somewhat dispiriting affair. But Leura Mall brims with independent shops, classy specialists and agreeable cafés.

Leura walks: Sublime Point & Bridal Veil Falls

Despite this, the best thing to do in Leura, NSW, is bushwalking.  There are several excellent Blue Mountains bushwalks in Leura, the easiest of which heads to the Sublime Point Lookout. The Sublime Point walk takes around 20 minutes, and rewards with superlative views of the Jamison Valley and Three Sisters.

You can also walk to Katoomba along the Prince Henry Cliff Walk, which has several lookouts along the way. And, if waterfalls are your thing, the Leura Cascades to Bridal Veil Falls walk takes about an hour. Start at the Leura Falls Picnic Area on Cliff Drive, then follow along Leura Falls Creek.
