Things to do in Mandurah, Western Australia

The best things to do in Mandurah, Western Australia include the Amaze Miniature Park, dolphin-watching with Mandurah Cruises and wildlife-spotting at the Creery Wetland Nature Reserve.

To the average visitor, Mandurah is just the bottom bit of Perth’s sprawling suburbia. It’s somewhere you go past on the drive from Perth to Margaret River.

To people who live in Mandurah, it’s a distinct city. And a fairly big one at that. It’s a place that offers plenty of the good life, but without the hassle of central Perth.

The reality is somewhere between the two. Mandurah is effectively a beach suburb, but it is big enough to have its own centre of gravity with its own suburbs, such as Dawesville. If you live in Mandurah, there’s very little reason to go into the centre of Perth. And, if you want to stay at the beach in an area with plenty of facilities, Mandurah is a decent shout in Western Australia.

Things to do in Mandurah, WA: Mandurah beaches

As for those beaches, Town Beach and Silver Sand Beach are next to each other and are busiest. Halls Head Beach is a better bet for surfing.

The best things to do in Mandurah are all water-based. The city is based around the Peel-Harvey estuary, and waterways are an integral part of Mandurah’s character. Unsurprisingly, several boat tours depart from Mandurah Marina next to Town Beach.

What to do in Mandurah: Dolphin cruises

These include Pirate Ship Mandurah, which is unashamedly aimed at kids with its pirate theme. The basic 45 minute cruises chug along the waterways, searching for dolphins and ogling expensive houses.

Mandurah Cruises specialises in dolphin-watching cruises, but also runs foodie trips along the Murray River. Seafood experiences, where you catch and eat your own lunch from the boat, are also available. Mandurah Cruises also runs Mandurah Waterbikes. These strange contraptions are half catamaran, half bicycle. You can hire one for $45 an hour, then look for dolphins as you pedal across the water.
