Things to do in Moree, NSW

The best things to do in Moree, NSW include the Bank Art Museum, birdwatching at the Gwydir Wetlands and pecan farm tours.

Moree, NSW, is a town in the north-western part of the unofficial New England region. Like many other country towns along the Newell Highway, Moree is on the cusp of the outback and acts as a regional service centre.

Most visitors to Australia will have no cause to visit Moree. But you might well pass through if driving the inland route from Brisbane to Melbourne, or heading east to west along the Gwydir Highway.

Things to do in Moree, NSW: Bank Art Museum

There are a few things to do in Moree, NSW starting with the Bank Art Museum. The art inside the Bank Art Museum is so-so, but it’s in an absolute gorgeous former bank building from 1911.

There’s also a twist to the town’s most popular playground. Rocket Park has a 14.9 metre model of a rocket as its centrepiece.

And, in case you hadn’t spotted the theme, there’s also a twist on the main leisure centre. The Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre is naturally heated by hot springs in the artesian basin surrounding the town. Unfortunately, the pools are closed for refurbishment until at least 2022.

Go north-east instead and you’ve got the option of visiting the Bullala National Park. It’s more of the same, though, and not really set up for tourists.

Local tour operator O’Dempseys also runs a couple of moderately interesting tours that show what’s going on around Moree. One visits a pecan farm, the other a cotton farm. Both tours give insights into how the industries work. Both tours last around three hours and cost $30.
