Things to do in Morwell, Victoria

The best things to do in Morwell, Victoria are the Gippsland Immigration Park, Morwell Centenary Rose Garden and PowerWorks Energy Education Centre.

Morwell, Victoria, is part of a cluster of moderately-sized towns in the Latrobe Valley region of Gippsland. It is sandwiched between Moe and regional hub Traralgon.

Morwell, alas, is not the most obviously exciting town in Victoria. It is a coal mining town, decorated with mines and power stations. But it does have some attractive elements to it.

Things to do in Morwell, Victoria: Gippsland Immigration Park

One of the top things to do in Morwell is visiting the Gippsland Immigration Park. It’s by Morwell Lake next to Kernot Hall, and is a little like an open air museum. Signs at the Gippsland Immigration Park tell the history of the Latrobe Valley Region, with particular emphasis on the impact made by various waves of immigration. It’s a really nice idea, with 72 information panels spread across the Gippsland Heritage Walk.

Also rather pretty is the Morwell Centenary Rose Garden. This garden kicked off in 1992, and now covers two hectares. There are more than 400 different types of roses represented, some specially-bred hybrids, and over 3,500 roses in total.

But Morwell isn’t really about the pretty and elegant – it’s about the industrial. Step forward the PowerWorks Energy Education Centre, next to the Morwell Power Station. PowerWorks is all about coal mining – there are huge reserves of brown coal in the Latrobe Valley – and energy production. Expect big, ugly machines, and a delve into the history of coal mining.
