Why visit Nundle, NSW? Well, there are some sizable towns in the New England region of New South Wales, most notably Tamworth and Armidale. But visiting the towns kinda defeats the point of New England. The region is all about the Australian bush and the country life.

That’s where somewhere like Nundle, NSW, comes in. No-one could mistake Nundle for a city. It’s an old mining village between the Peel River and Great Dividing Range, south-east of Tamworth. There aren’t many Nundle attractions, but the town has carved a niche for specialist crafts.

Things to do in Nundle, NSW: Nundle Woollen Mill tours

The Nundle Woollen Mill is a good example of this. It still uses traditional spinning machinery to make woollen clothing. The Nundle Woollen Mill is most famous for its socks, but if you’re more interested in the process than the product, there are tours of the mill at 11am and 2pm. What to do in Nundle, NSW: Gold fossicking in the Peel River

Fossicking is another reason to visit Nundle. The gold mines may have long since closed, but there’s still gold in the Peel River. Fossickers have also been known to find sapphires here, so why not pick up a pan and try your luck? The Mount Misery Gold Mine Café hires out pans to anyone fancying the Nundle fossicking experience

If you’d prefer to catch fish than find sapphires, the Arc-en-Ciel Trout Farm to the south of Nundle is a better bet. The Drunken Trout Café here serves up cooked trout for anyone who can’t be bothered to catch their own.

There’s also good fishing at Chaffey Dam on the Nundle Road towards Tamworth.

Accommodation in Nundle, NSW

There are a couple of interesting Nundle accommodation options. First up is the Peel Inn, a classic country hotel that first opened its doors in 1860. Much of the decoration remains unchanged from the gold rush days. Rooms at the Peel Inn are surprisingly modern, and cost from $150 for an ensuite king room when booked via the Inn website.

The other quirky Nundle accommodation option is the DAG Sheep Station, which pitches itself at groups. Individuals are welcome to a taste of the sheep station life, however. There are a few cottages available, but the real experience comes from sleeping in the DAG Sheep Station’s shearers’ quarters.
