What are the best things to do in Ravenshoe, Queensland?

The best things to do in Ravenshoe, Queensland, include Millstream Falls, the Nganyaji Interpretive Centre and Innot Hot Springs.

Ravenshoe in the Atherton Tableland region likes to boast that it is the highest town in Queensland. It’s historically a timber town, but it has carved out a niche for people wanting to escape the tropical heat around Cairns or Innisfail.

Ravenshoe – The highest town in Queensland

Ravenshoe’s 930 metre elevation means temperatures rarely rise into the late 20 degrees Celsius. And the protection of the World Heritage-listed rainforest around Ravenshoe has largely seen the timber trade replaced by alternative lifestylers.

The hippy crowd tends to live around Ravenshoe, rather than in the town itself. So don’t come expecting some sort of Age of Aquarius tie-dye wonderland. Ravenshoe has the vibe of a fairly ordinary service town.

Long before the hippies arrived, however, the Jirrbal Aboriginal people lived in the area. There’s an attempt to tell their story at the Nganyaji Interpretive Centre. This small museum is pretty much in the centre of Ravenshoe.

There are also a few good quality attractions around Ravenshoe. Things to do in Ravenshoe include the Windy Hill Wind Farm Viewing Area to the north-east of the town centre.

If, for some inexplicable reason, you prefer looking at waterfalls, then go south-west instead. The tiny Millstream Falls National Park is home to two impressive waterfalls. These are, somewhat unimaginatively, called Big Millstream Falls and Little Millstream Falls.

Innot Hot Springs, meanwhile, is a rough-and-ready spa centre. Which is another way of saying there are no facilities there whatsoever. You just walk down to the creek and dip your toes in the thermally-heated waters. You’ll find the hot springs just upstream of the bridge.
