The best things to do in Sale, Victoria – free, expert guide

The best things to do in Sale, Victoria, include the Sale Botanic Gardens, Sale Commons Wetlands Walk and Port of Sale Heritage Cruises.

Sale, Victoria, is a medium-sized town on the Princes Highway, just west of the Gippsland Lakes. It’s roughly halfway on the drive from Traralgon to Bairnsdale, and often treated as a gateway to the lakes rather than a destination in its own right.

Things to do in Sale, Victoria, include the Gippsland Art Gallery. It showcases local artists and those from elsewhere in Australia.

But frankly, if you’ve spend your time in Sale wandering round the Gippsland Art Gallery, you have missed the point. The best attractions here are outdoors.

Things to do in Sale, Victoria: Sale Botanic Gardens and Lake Guthridge

Treat the Sale Botanic Gardens as a starting point. These gardens include an animal enclosure, children’s playground, a sensory garden and sculptures.

The Sale Botanic Gardens are very close to Lake Guthridge and Lake Guyatt, which run into each other. There’s a walking trail around these two man-made lakes. The Lake Guthridge and Lake Guyatt Loop is 3.4km long, although a good chunk of it forms part of the longer Sale Common Wetlands walk.

Sale Commons Wetlands Walk

This 15km return walk is easy-going and easy to break down into sections. The Port of Sale is generally accepted as the best starting place however.

The Sale Common Wetlands Walk is part gravel track, part boardwalk as it alternates between marshes and red gum woodland. On the way, you’ll see plenty of birdlife – particularly the swans and pelicans at the eastern end of the boardwalk. There’s a bird hide here if you want to stop and watch for a while.

Things to do in Sale, Victoria: Port of Sale Heritage Cruises

Top of the list of things to do in Sale, however, are the Port of Sale Heritage Cruises.

These gentle cruises along the waterways incorporate settler history, Aboriginal customs and wildlife spotting. They also go under the cute, manually-operated Swing Bridge across the Latrobe River.
