Things to do in Woodgate Beach, QLD: Fishing

Woodgate Beach itself is obviously the main attraction. It stretches around 16km from Burrum Point in the south to Theodolite Creek in the north. 4WD drive vehicles are allowed on the beach, which makes it very popular with fishermen. There’s good prawning and crabbing to be had, alongside the usual line fishing.

Woodgate Beach not much of a surf beach – the protection offered by Fraser Island stops the big waves getting in. But this is great news for the aquatic life. Dolphins are frequently spotted offshore, as are the migrating humpback whales during the winter months.

Woodgate Beach kangaroos

Whales and dolphins aren’t the only creatures seen in Woodgate Beach. The town and surrounding areas are notorious hangouts for kangaroos. If you ever want the Australian cliché of kangaroos bounding around front lawns, cricket pitches and bowling greens, this is the place to come.

But Woodgate Beach isn’t all about the beach and the ocean. It is pretty much enveloped by the Burrum Coast National Park, which is renowned for its birdwatching.

Burrum Coast National Park bushwalks

The Burrum Coast National Park is broken up into four sections, of which the Burrum River section is closer to the town of Burrum Heads. The Woodgate section of the national park has several good walking trails, however. The 5km Banksia track circuit is the easiest to reach, and includes a 400km raised boardwalk stretch. Cabbage palms, eucalypts and spring wildflowers complement the banksias.

Elsewhere in the Burrum Coast National Park, the 5.8km Birdhide Walk and 12.3km Melaleuca Track from Burrum Point offer salt pans, swamps, mangroves and plenty of birdlife.

Things to do in Woodgate Beach, QLD: Camping & caravan park

There are also two camping sections within the national park, at Burrum Point and Kinkuna. Facilities are basic, though, so campers and caravanners might prefer the NRMA Woodgate Beach Holiday Park. This is often just called the Woodgate Beach Caravan Park.

Woodgate Beach accommodation prices here cost from $42 per night for powered sites and $99 for villas. Bookings can be made online.

The centre of life in these parts, however, is the Woodgate Beach Hotel. It has its own motel rooms and small caravan park, but you really come to this pub for beers in the sun under the swaying palm trees.

The drive from Brisbane to Woodgate Beach takes around four hours.
