What are the best things to do in Yackandandah, Victoria?

Things to do in Yackandandah, Victoria, include the Yackandandah Museum, Baranduda Regional Park and Schmidt’s Strawberry Winery.

The historic Victorian mining village of Yackandandah tends to be overlooked in favour of its bigger neighbour, Beechworth. This is partly because Beechworth is bigger and has more Ned Kelly-related tourist attractions. But Yackandandah still has a handsome historic streetscape, and a couple of attractions worth the look.

Where is Yackandandah?

Yackandandah is part of Victoria’s High Country, although it’s in the transition zone towards the Murray River. The drive from Melbourne to Yackandandah broadly follows the Hume Highway towards Albury, going via Seymour, Avenel, Euroa, Benalla and Glenrowan, before branching east at Wangaratta. The Wangaratta to Yackandandah drive goes via Beechworth and, frankly, most just stop at Beechworth.

The overall Melbourne to Yackandandah drive is 308km in distance and takes around three hours and 19 minutes.

Things to do in Yackandandah, Victoria

Yackandandah’s charm lies largely in its historic streetscape and heritage buildings. There are no stand-out stunners, but the collective effect is charming. In terms of things to do in Yackandandah, the Yackandandah Museum is well-meaning but inessential. It preserves thousands of local historic documents, but the Yackandandah Museum doesn’t tell a greater, wider-ranging story. The display on squatters and settlers is half decent, however.

What to do in Yackandandah: Baranduda Regional Park

If you’re more interested in Yackandandah’s natural attractions, the Baranduda Waterfall on Indigo Creek lies just off Ewarts Road. The nearby Baranduda Regional Park has a few walking trails, and is a good spot for spotting native flora and fauna.

Other attractions nearby include Schmidt’s Strawberry Winery in neighbouring Allans Flat, and the Bonegilla Migrant Experience near Wodonga. Take a short drive south, and there are several wineries in Myrtleford, including Gapsted Wines.
