Walgett, NSW, is an outback town in the remote north-west of the state. Visitors are most likely to pass through on the way to opal mining hotspot Lightning Ridge – but it’s also on the quickest land route from Brisbane to Perth.

Walgett, NSW, is a junction town. The Castlereagh Highway and Kamilaroi Highway meet here, but more important to the town’s history is the confluence of the Barwon and Namoi rivers. The river setting allowed products from the surrounding farms to be sent through the Murray-Darling Basin.

These days, Walgett is still primarily an agricultural service hub, but there are a few things to do for visitors.

Most interesting of these Walgett attractions is the Dharriwaa Elders Group Cultural Exhibition Centre. This Indigenous culture centre takes a look at Aboriginal life in and around Walgett, while housing artefacts important to the Dharriwaa people.

Indigenous culture is a thread that runs through Walgett. As you enter town, you’ll see a huge mural of Aboriginal country singer Jimmy Little emblazoned on the water tower. And the town’s best walking track is named after an Indigenous tracker.

Things to do in Walgett, NSW: Norman Tracker Walford Walkway

The Norman Tracker Walford Walkway stretches for 1.5km along the Namoi River. It comes with signs explaining the role of trackers and Walford’s exploits.

For most visitors, however, the best thing to do in Walgett is go for a dip in the Artesian Bore Baths. The water in these baths comes from the Great Artesian Basin. They have a natural constant temperature of between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius.

Walgett accommodation options are fairly ropey. The Pink House is the best bet, and the Coolabah Motel will do if you’re not overly fussy.
